CLAY STREET RESIDENCE

Clay Street Residence in San Francisco involved the complete gutting and reimagining of a historic fire damaged residence. The existing residence was a formal house from an earlier era that was not particularly conducive to the needs of a young family and their more modern lifestyle. The main living spaces and the garden were opened up to each other to encourage shared family experiences. A new centralized stair rationalized what had been a circuitous circulation system. A large skylight at the top of the new stair lets light filter through the four levels of the house and becomes the heart of the home. Three new children’s bedrooms and a playroom occupy the “attic” level of the house and reveal the animated form of the roofline. Careful detailing and exacting craft bridge an homage to the existing traditional house and a more informal, modern and cozy family lifestyle.
